The receiver takes a few minutes to find itself when you first switch it on, especially if you are in a building. But after the initial search it finds the satellites pretty quickly. Walking around outside with the receiver in a trouser pocket shows 5 - 6 satellites. I tested it on a regular journey across the fens and it got all the turns and junctions spot on. Even the speed, sorry, safety camera locations were spot on. I deliberately set off from home on a different route to the one suggested and Tom Tom was not fazed.
It immediately locked on to my location and started suggesting alternatives to get me back on to the programmed route. The Palm and the the GPS receiver are light and small enough to carry in pockets, and the volume of the spoken instructions is loud enough to be heard even while stuffed into the inside pocket of my leather jacket. How long does yours take to lock on to satellites from a cold start? Mine will take upwards of 4 minutes, even longer if in the house. Sometimes never when in the house. Once it has locked on, if switched off and on again it locks on almost immediately. In the car 6 satellites register on the pda pretty much all the time. It's just that initial start from cold that is so annoying.
